Description

This is something I never thought I'd do, submitting a photo to gfxartist. Mostly because I think this site should be about cg, not photos..Like in the old days ;)

Anyways, I got my new(and first) camera two days ago and just went ahead and snapped som shots in one of my tanks. The settings were a bit off so it's kinda dark but I think it turned out ok, beeing a n00b and all.. :p
For those who don't know, it's a Cichlid from Lake Malawi, Africa.

Technical data:
Camera: Canon EOS350D
Lens: EF-S 18-55 mm
Location: Home! :p
Shutter speed: 1/125 second
Aperture (F-number): 3,5
ISO: 400
WB: Auto
Handheld

Congrats on the new camera. Not a bad first attempt. Photographing aquariums isn't easy. As you've noted, the image is a bit dark, but if you've got Photoshop (or other photo-editing software) you could lighten the highlights and midtones a bit; this would make a big difference. You've also got a noticable amount of noise, probably due to the higher ISO, and the subject is a bit out of focus. Here's a tip: If you have an external flash that you can point upward, set your ISO to 100, turn you shutter speed up to 1/500 sec or faster, open the lid to your tank, and use a white piece of paper as a reflector to bounce the strobe light downward. This technique will allow you to catch these moving targets without motion blur while providing plenty of light. It takes practice, but the results will amaze you.

Anyway, nice first attempt. +6

Thanks for the advice. I know the the focus is a little off, focal point seems to be on the red scales(think I might have used autofocus on this one, which is really dumb when it comes to fish :p) I dont have an external flash I'm afraid, it's on my list of things to get when I can afford it, aswell as an macro lens and alot of other stuff :)
I'm going to change one of the lightubes(the one that gives the blue light) and replace it with one that gives more actual light, which I think will help out alot.

Madanapale, thanks! Actually I've been a member since May 2003 and before that I had been lurking around since the start of GFX. Just never got around to posting anything.. Though I hardly ever draw anything, and when I do I never finish it, so... :)
Used to frequent 3dpalette.com before it went down, which was a pity, still miss that community. :)

Nice shot, the colors are mysterious and add to the usually bland pebbles for fish tanks.
